I’m a long time photography, computer, and Linux enthusiast. I started with a Pentax SLR doing mostly B&W because of both cost and creative control in doing your own developing and printing. I experimented with Ansel Adams’ zone system and studied Edward Westons‘ work . Eventually I drifted away from photography because of time constraints.
About ten years ago I developed an interest in Linux, primarily because I was looking for a simple, reliable, and free internet sharing application. Someone suggested I try something based on Linux such as LRP or Coyote, and I became a big fan of Linux. As my Linux knowledge grew I set up more elaborate systems such as file servers, email servers and spam filters for my home network, firewalls, and the latest being proxy servers primarily for filtering my kids’ internet access. Simultaenuously with my venture into Linux I also delved into computer hardware, building my own computers, LANs , and wireless networks. Even set up a small company with their first networking system involving file and email servers.
The emergence of digital cameras for the consumer renewed my interest in photography. Started with a Canon G3 and now own a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. As time went on I found myself having to deal with a variety of issues ranging from managing pictures, touchup, quirks unique to digital cameras, and protecting your pictures from potential loss because of hardware failure or operational mishap.
The merging of photography and digital devices has brought new challenges to the consumer ranging from hardware to software issues, and despite having an extensive background in computers, peripherals, and software, I have often been frustrated or perplexed on just what to do. Often I have found what seemed to be a great solution to some particular issue only the find problems later on. I've also been occasionally asked questions regarding digital photography and photo management that indicate that your average person is often at a loss on what to do.
My aims with this website are multifold:
- Share the results of my many trials and errors
- Help you avoid pitfalls and even possible disaster when it comes to managing your photo collection
- Provide tips on taking pictures
- Do a bit of photoblogging
- Have fun
Of course there are some commercial interests in this, hence the ads, but I don't expect much from that. Just another experiment. However I will never recommend an approach or product based on financial interests. Nor will I plagiarize or copy someone else's work, and don't expect my work to be plagiarized or copied. I’m a big fan of open source and always will be, and my recommendations are based on what makes the most sense to me, whether it involves an approach or a particular product.
